Advancing
Opportunities’ (AO) College/Career Access Institute will deliver education and training to students with learning
disabilities, and other disabilities, for accessing and succeeding in
postsecondary careers and college opportunities at Middlesex County College
this summer from July 11th-15th.
The
goal of the Institute is to empower, educate, and engage secondary school students
in achieving their academic and career goals. The program approach is that of high
expectations for every student, and delivers a personalized learning
environment, opportunities for students to make academic and real-world
connections, and gives students a view of wonderful post-secondary
experiences. The 5-day Institute encourages
students with disabilities to keep on track in school with a focus on the
future and an understanding of high quality support for accomplishing their
goals. The Institute incorporates the attributes of one- to-one college coaching

The following are some of the highlights of the
topics covered in the coursework.
- Technology and your Future…. about assistive technology and how to integrate it into their learning.
- More about Me….Students will learn how to evaluate important skills and identify important goals.
- Leadership and Leading…..Students will learn how to take a leadership role in their planning process and work as a team using project based instruction.
- Career Awareness….Students will learn about a variety of occupations and identify the competency required for areas of interest.
- Career Readiness…..Students will address their decision-making skills, improve problem solving abilities, and understand the importance of responsibility dependability, punctuality, and integrity.
