College Courses and Summer Camps in the Summer

If you are a high-achieving student and are interested in taking college courses in the summer, many schools offer summer programs for high school students.

Rutgers University is currently promoting classes to 9th, 10th, and 11th graders. Students must have a minimum GPA of a 3.0.Students can take up to two introductory-level college courses in a variety of fields. Scholarships are also available on the basis of academic merit and financial need. Visit Summer Scholars for details and to apply.

Middlesex County College also has a high school scholars programs for students interested in taking classes during the school year or the summer. Visit MCC High School Scholars Program for details and to apply.

Senior Summer To Do List

Building Your College List (Research, Visits and Interviews) - During the summer it is a great time to finalize your list of fit schools to apply to. It is important to pick schools in each category.
     * Reach - college standards exceed your scores
     * Target - college standards comparable to your scores
     * Safety/Likely - your scores exceed the college standards

Applications - Create an account on Common Application for the schools you are interested in. Try to have the majority done while you are on vacation. Also start applications for schools that are not on Common Application.

Essays - Work on your draft of the Common Application Essay/Personal Statement. Common Application Essay Prompts.

Test Preparation - SAT, SAT Subject Tests, and/or ACT

Community Service - Summer is also a great time to participate in community service. Please see the Volunteering Tab for ideas.

While you are preparing for the exams, check out some of the study guides posted on collegeboard.org. Teachers are also providing review sessions, be sure to take advantage of these sessions. Scores can be accessed online in July. Click on AP Scores to read more information. Also check the AP Credit Policy information for the schools you are interested in attending.

Volunteer Opportunity - Fords Middle School Carnival

Fords Middle School Carnival is looking for student volunteers who would like to work on April 25, 2015, from 10-6. The carnival will be held at Fords Middle School on Fanning St. in Fords. The volunteers will be asked to run games, monitor blow ups, help with set up and take down, serve food, and for those that are interested in the creative aspect, face paint! Women in Computer Science

The Undergraduate Women in Computer Science (WICS) at the University of Pennsylvania and the Dept. of Computer and Information Science (CIS) would like to invite your academically strong female students to attend Women in Computer Science High School Day for Girls on Fri, April 10, 2015.  The goal of this free program is to encourage women to pursue a college degree and successful career in a computer science related field. We are targeting high school girls, especially those who excel in science and mathematics, who may be considering a college degree in science or engineering.

The results of the assessment, in conjunction with your academic background, goals and interests, are used by academic advisors and counselors to place you in the appropriate college courses that meet your skill level.

Preparing for HSPA

On March 4th, 5th, and 6th, juniors will be taking the HSPA. Below is a guide and preparation booklet to give you an idea of what to expect. Tutoring is also offered throughout the week and on some Saturdays. See your guidance counselor for the tutoring schedule.

As a reminder, if a student has a cellphone on them during these dates, his or her test will be voided.

Volunteer/Club Opportunity - Students Helping Students Club

Mrs. Tulko and Mrs. DeVito will be starting a new club, Students Helping Students Club. By participating in this club, you will also have the opportunity to receive volunteer hours. In case you missed the Arts High presentation, feel free to come down to guidance if you have any questions. The deadline to apply is November 15th. Auditions are held on Sunday, December 8, 2013.

Acceptance is competitive. Once applied, requirements for the auditions will be posted on their site on November 15th. 

If you are interested, be sure to visit their website and see the video of the school and instructors. Students accepted will attend on Tuesdays, between 1 and 4, starting January for about 14 weeks. They are excused from their fourth block class but are responsible for the work missed.
